Potato Growing Competition Continues Despite Lockdown!

(Competitors - see below for latest competition update!)

Southwell Methodist Church is continuing it’s potato-growing competition despite the lockdown, with its gathering plans shelved for a celebration when the lockdown is lifted.

The competition began back in February when community members and school children were invited to purchase seed potatoes for planting, aiming to have the biggest crop, largest single potato or oddest shaped potato in order to win prizes!

All the proceeds raised from the sale of the seed potatoes have already been donated to 'All We Can’, an international charity which is supporting potato farmers in Ethiopia. It was hoped that the celebration events (originally planned for 4th July) would also raise money for the worthy cause but as gatherings are not currently allowed, it was postponed. Donations can still be made through the ‘All We Can’ website: https://www.allwecan.org.uk/give/make-a-donation/ The competition will still be judged and prizes awarded (participants have been contacted with arrangements) and we’re looking forward to an opportunity to meet together in the not too distant future to celebrate the project and where possible add to the fund-raising! More information can be found at the church website: SouthwellMethodist.org.uk. We will also be publishing photographs with folks progress on our FaceBook Page (@SouthwellMethodist) so please do come and have a look, like and follow our page to see what else is happening in the life of our church - the doors may be closed but the church is and has always been open throughout these unusual times!

Southwell Methodist Church SuperSpud Competition Update!

Hello again Superspud Potato growers,

Hoping your potatoes have grown well for you and either have been, or are, ready to be harvested.

The weighing of your crop and your largest potato was due to take place on the Superspud Challenge Celebration Day which would have been taking place this weekend on Saturday 4th July.

The deadline for harvesting your Superspuds is therefore fast approaching .......

Weighing and photographing your whole crop and your largest potato (don’t forget to photograph your oddest shaped potato too) should have taken place by 4th July.

Your pictures need to show your potatoes on the scales so we can see the weight - then forward to Revd Peter Hibberts by email (peter.hibberts@methodist.org.uk) by

4th July.

Once we are all able to mix freely we will hold our Superspud Celebration Day at which point we will display all the photographic entries and especially the winners! (You could store your largest and oddest shaped potatoes as long as they are still fit to exhibit but don’t waste them!) We will still be organising Children’s activities, sharing food and having a fun Beetle Drive. We will send further details nearer the time!

We are posting photos on our FaceBook Page (@SouthwellMethodist) and Website too (southwellmethodist.org.uk). Please note that you should only send photographs that you are happy to be used in this way.

Thanks for taking part. Hope you have a good potato harvest! Stay safe and keep well.

Janet Walker (Coordinator) and Revd Peter Hibberts (Minister)
