Getting Involved!

Particular Opportunities at present include:

Alpha Help Flyer

We are running an Alpha Course for 12 weeks, commencing 11th September (excluding half term) and with an away day at Sherwood Pines on November 10th. The sessions will be at the Church Hall and will involve food, a talk and discussion. They will begin at 7pm and end at 9:30pm, but help will be needed to set up, clear away and lead the discussion groups. The next meeting of the planning team will be on July 3rd, 8pm at the manse - please contact the minister if you'd like to be involved in any way.

We need help in the following areas:

Setting up: Transforming the Methodist Church Hall into a swanky restaurant style setting (this will be coordinated by a design team but we’ll need folk to set up the space between 6pm and 7pm each evening during the course.

Catering: This is exactly what it says on the tin but could involve leading a team on one particular night (planning, shopping and instructing the team) or coming along to prepare food (or preparing food at home to bring) and then serving, clearing away and washing up afterwards. This could mean a commitment between 6-7pm, 7pm-9pm, 9pm-10pm or even right through (6pm-10pm) if possible. The food will be as up-market as we can muster but will be designed to be easy to serve in our limited kitchen facilities. There will also be expenses for this.

Facilitating groups: This entails being a leader or a supporter in a small group of 6-8 people. Each week there will be a talk and then discussion time on a specific topic. Those facilitating groups will be given prior sight of the topic and possible discussion lines. The hope is that leaders will get to know those in their group over the entirety of the course, so we are aiming for consistency in group leading - if you can volunteer for all twelve sessions and the away day, that would be ideal - but don’t worry if you can’t. The main commitment here is between 7pm and 9pm each evening and 10am-4pm on the away day.

Clearing away: This entails clearing away and ensuring that the premises are ready and clean for the next users. It could be washing up, moving furniture, sweeping or mopping etc and will be between 9pm and 10pm each time.

Away Day support: This could be anything that is needed on the away day in Sherwood Forest. We will still be catering (a winter picnic) and will have stuff to set-up and pack away much as we do on a normal evening. This is a 9am-5pm commitment.

There are many opportunities for you to join the team at SMC. If you would like to volunteer, please contact the minister and he will be happy to discuss the opportunities we have. We operate 'safe' recruitment and it may be necessary for volunteers (particularly those coming into contact with children and vulnerable adults) to take part in our 'Creating Safer Space' training and /or undergo a DBS (Disclosure Barring Service, criminal reference check) though this should not dissuade you from volunteering it is routine procedure as we aim to safeguard those who come into our care.

The best opportunities to get involved in the life of our church and particularly in helping us to follow God's Mission inside our church and community is to get involved in the many conversations that happen are Worship, Hospitality, Mission and Service, and Intentional Faith Development. These conversations are convened by the folk shown on our tree, below, and happen three or four times a year. They are open meetings and operate like 'think tanks' to discuss our work and new ideas - but beware, most of the folk who go to these meetings come away with something exciting to do in the life of the church - they're not just talking shops, they're how we aim to be fruitful together! If you'd like to be involved in any of these conversations feel free to talk to the folk listed or if you're not sure how to do that, speak to the minister and he can point you in the right direction!
