Hebrews 5:7

“During the day of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death and he was heard because of his reverent submission.”

Hebrews 4:16

“Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

Because prayer was central to Christ’s ministry, and He wanted it to be vital to ours, the Southwell Methodist Prayer Group was started approximately 18 years ago. In the early days, the group had a large number of members, and although it has got smaller over the years, through God’s grace, the Group has continued to meet in both good times and difficult times. “Again I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18: 19-20)

Throughout the past 18 years, we have been greatly encouraged – we have seen and experienced God’s presence and his movement, and we have had prayers answered. We have witnessed healings, situations altered, and strength to go on in difficult times. We have seen people experience wholeness of spirit, body and mind – yes! – in wonderful, surprising and unexpected ways. Also, people have been enriched, directed and grown closer to God through his presence in their lives.

The Prayer Group meets every Tuesday evening between about 7:30 and 9:00, normally at 29 Farthingate Close, Southwell, and everyone is welcome. Meetings, which are informal, start with a passage from the Bible, which can be suggested by any one member, followed by praise, worship, thanksgiving, prayer requests, songs, psalms and quiet contemplation – in any order or combination - in whatever way Gods power and ministry through the Holy Spirit is directing or prompting us, but always with the aim of following His example and obeying His commands.

The Prayer Group would love to welcome new members, whether able to attend regularly or not, and even if you can join in for only a few minutes at any time during the meeting, you are guaranteed a very warm welcome.

If you are unable to attend but wish to request a prayer, you can contact –

James 5:

13. Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray

14. Is any one of you sick?

15. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well. The Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned he will be forgiven.

16. Therefore confess your sins to each other so that you may be healed.

Philippians 4:

6. Do not be anxious about anything. But in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

7. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
